Frequently Asked Questions

Is Sea Scattering safe?

Our captains are US Coast Guard Certified with over 40 years of sailing. All boats are outfitted with life jackets for passengers as young as 13.  Prior to sailing, your captain will conduct a brief mandatory safety session. It is imperative that all sailing members be on board by that time.

How many people can attend?

The yachts can accommodate up to 6 family members along with our captain and first mate.
* Ask about the availability of our 12-person yacht if that is a need.

Is Sea Scattering legal?

Ashes are harmless and present no health risks and are therefore legal to be scattered in Louisiana.

What should I bring? What should I not bring?

We ask that you wear soft non-black soled shoes, sneakers, socks or barefoot. If you are chilled easily, we suggest you bring a light jacket.

Finger foods or self-contained snacks are allowed but limited. We have no eating utensils on board.
Your first mate will offer you a great complimentary selection of finger foods and light-colored drinks during the sail.

*No red foods or drinks are permitted and will not be allowed on board please.

Are we licensed and insured?

Nola Burial at Sea, LLC, is independently owned, operated and insured.
Each yacht is also independently licensed and insured.

What are the prices, cancellation and refund policies?

All sea burial packages start at $2000 for a family of 6, and each is customized to your needs only with NO hidden fees.
A $500 deposit is required upon booking to hold the yacht; with the balance due 3 days prior to sailing.

*Full refunds are available if done 10 days prior to sailing with no exceptions please.
*Weather cancellations are at the full discretion of the captain.
*If a cancellation is warranted, a full refund or reschedule is provided.
*Our captains offer a Worry-Free Weather Guarantee.
*Special pricing for unattended burials.

How long is the trip and how far out do we go?

The trip is 2 hours long. So, it is imperative that you be on time for your sailing.  We are sorry, but refunds or reschedules are not given for late arrivals. So please be sure that all parties are aware of the location and time of sailing.

The Federal Clean Water Act requires you to go out at least 3 nautical miles from shore to scatter the remains.

What other services are available?

Any additional services such as a videographer or clergy can be included or arranged for you but will affect the overall number of attendees as only 6 passengers are allowed on most sails.

Can the family participate in the scatter?

We encourage our families to be a part of the memorable scatter ceremony. Families may choose to use a preferred, biodegradable urn, or they may want to do our beautiful roses filled basket scatter.
It is entirely the family’s option. Other family members will have the opportunity to toss rose petals and sunflowers after the scatter with either option that you choose.

Is there any paperwork required?

At the end of the ceremony, we will mail to you a Nola Burials at Sea Certificate of scatter with the date, time and scatter coordinates.
We complete all EPA required paperwork.

Are unattended sea burial services available?

We provide service for unattended sea burials as well. Photo proof of the sea scatter ceremony are given to the family along with the certificate of sea burial.
You can either ship us the remains or we can make arrangements to have them picked up locally.
Give us a call to discuss the pricing options available to you.

Is alcohol and smoking allowed?

Depending on the yacht available, one of our first mates provides white wine and other light-colored drinks, so we ask that you not bring anything red or dark in color. We will let you know which yacht we will be using prior to sailing.
Smoking is allowed in a designated area of the boat.

Where do we sail from?

We sail from the Westend boat launch which is located by the Southern Yacht Club off Lakeshore Drive. The closest GPS address is 101 N. Roadway Dr., N.O., La 70124, which is the actual address for the NOLA Community Sailing Center. Parking is conveniently provided along the driveway.
